Does Athletic Greens (AG1) have magnesium?

Does AG1 by Athletic Greens also contain magnesium? And if so, how many milligrams per shake and in what combination is it incorporated in the Greens powder? We would like to address these and other questions in more detail in this article. AG1 Athletic Greens magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral for the human body, which must be supplied regularly from the outside. Therefore, it is gratifying that magnesium is also contained in AG1 by Athletic Greens.

Why is magnesium important for the body?

The European Food Safety Authority has confirmed that magnesium (the chemical abbreviation is Mg) in the human body helps to maintain or support the following functions:

  • Muscle function
  • Energy metabolism
  • Nervous function
  • psychological function
  • protein synthesis
  • Bone maintenance
  • tooth preservation

Magnesium is also included in the following functions:

  1. Magnesium acts as an electrolyte, thereby enabling the transmission of information in the body.
  2. Magnesium is involved in the release, storage and conversion of ATP. ATP is, succinctly put, the fuel of human cells.
  3. Magnesium activates many essential enzymes in the body and is therefore also known as a co-enzyme.
  4. Magnesium relaxes the muscles. It is therefore not surprising that a magnesium deficiency is often detected by muscle cramps during athletic sessions or even in the night sleep.
  5. Magnesium supports the mineralization of bones and teeth.

Magnesium glycinate, magnesium oxide, magnesium carbonate or magnesium citrate?

Magnesium can be roughly divided into two categories:

  1. organic (magnesium glycinate and magnesium oxide)
  2. inorganic (magnesium carbonate and magnesium citrate)

In dietary supplements, one or the other magnesium compounds are usually used. Magnesium is also readily obtained from magnesium-rich algae such as sea lettuce or sea lettuce.

Magnesium organic or inorganic?

It is believed that magnesium from organic salts, i.e., magnesiumcitrate or magnesiumglycinate is absorbed by the body up to 10% better than the inorganic magnesium oxide or magnesium carbonate. This is because when the magnesium is bound to an organic amino acid such as glycine, it does not compete in the bloodstream with other minerals such as calcium for optimal absorption. In addition, these organic compounds are more stable so that the mineral remains undamaged in the stomach even longer and can be better utilised by the body. Since it can be absorbed much better by the body, chelated magnesium (gastric magnesium glycinate) is not laxative. So anyone who suffers from diarrhoea is excellently advised to take magnesium from glycinate.

Organic Magnesium Glycinate in AG1 Athletic Greens

It is gratifying to read that AG1 by Athletic Greens contains the organic compound magnesiumglycinate. This organic compound is also known as magnesium chelate or chelated magnesium. Especially in the first AG1 ingredient, Spirulina is particularly high in magnesium and is present in an optimal combination with other minerals such as iron, selenium, potassium, making it optimally utilized by the body. Magnesium daily dose contained in AG1 by Athletic Greens?

Now that we know that magnesium is contained in AG1 in organic form, the question naturally arises as to the amount per shake and to what extent this can meet the daily requirement.

Magnesium daily requirement

The following table illustrates the average daily requirement of magnesium
Women from 25 yearsMen from 25 years
300 mg per day350 mg per day
The daily requirement of magnesium is on average 350 mg per day. People who are active in sports usually have a higher muscle mass. Therefore, a higher magnesium requirement is also necessary to maintain optimal muscle function. For people who exercise more than 5 hours per week, the magnesium requirement increases by about 50 mg per day.

One Greens shake per day contains 40 mg of magnesium. What at first seems to be too little, however, is to be evaluated very positively, since one would quickly achieve an overdose, i.e. a magnesium surplus, with a higher value in the course of the day. AG1 by Athletic Greens prevents this with a careful dosage, so that both a magnesium deficiency and a magnesium overdose can be prevented.

Detect magnesium deficiency & prevent

In the following video, 4 indicators are mentioned that you can use to detect magnesium deficiency early.

Magnesium side effects

Those who take too much magnesium over a longer period of time can expect side effects such as diarrhoea or similar gastrointestinal complaints. However, magnesium glycinate, as found in AG1, is considered to be particularly well tolerated by the intestines. In addition, the dosage within AG1 is deliberately chosen so that there is no risk of overdosing due to the recommended daily intake (provided no additional magnesium is supplemented).

Magnesium in food?

If you want to take a lot of magnesium throughout the day, especially through food, you should pay attention to the following foods in the future:

  • Beans
  • Whole grain products
  • Nuts
  • Cheese and other dairy products
  • Lentils
  • Peas

Magnesium calcium zinc and vitamin D?

When taking magnesium, it is important that it is in harmony with other minerals such as calcium, zinc and also vitamin D. Because if one of the values is permanently deficient during the course of the day or is taken in the wrong proportion, the absorption of all other minerals and vitamins is also disturbed, which can lead to malnutrition despite correct intake. In Athletic Greens® AG1, the minerals and vitamins are mixed in a homogeneous ratio.

Unfortunately, AG1 powder from Athletic Greens does not contain any vitamin D. You can read more about this here: Athletic Greens Vitamin D.
This April, the lack of vitamin D in AG1 powder is not a problem because Athletic Greens currently includes a bottle of vitamin D3 with every package of AG1.
